How do I transfer data between 2 different phones?

What is the easiest way to transfer my telephone contacts and email addresses from the regular mini-sized SIM in my Samsung Galaxy Y to the micro SIM in my Nexus 5?

Are they not already set up as Google contacts?

If so then as soon as you login to your new phone with your Gmail account then they will be downloaded.

No. I do not believe that they are already set up as Google contacts.

Why should they be, and how do I change them so they are?

If they're saved as google contacts, they will automatically be downloaded to your phone as soon as you sign into your google account. This gets rid of the need to transfer them between phones.

How to do it depends on your old phone, but the easiest way is just to export your contacts to your phones storage and them re-import them, and select them as a google contacts. You should have the option to do this via the people app in your old phone (may have to go to its settings within the app)

On your galaxy Y, if you haven't already, import your SIM contacts into the default android contacts app (currently called People, not sure how far back your Y goes). Then go into settings, accounts, click on your gmail account and check the box for sync contacts.

On your N5, also go in and turn on contacts sync and, in moments, you should find your contacts already in the People app. You can then export to the SIM card if you desire.

Thanks Guys.

Exporting them to the SD card in the old phone and then importing them back as Google contacts worked a treat :)

All is well.
