How do I turn off notification sounds?

Settings-->My Device-->Sound-->Volume
Turn Notification Volume all the way down.
You can also scroll down to the Ringtones and Notifications and select "silent" as the notification ringtone. This will prevent it from making a sound if the notification volume is accidentally turned back up.
