im already rooted but i want to update to the 3.70.... i have clockworkmod as my recovery. ive made a nandroid backup. now how do i flash a custom ROM? when i hit the links supplied here in the forums then what do to get it on my device.. sorry im still new to this.

ok, i see all the links but what do i do to get them on my device? is there a way i can access them from my device? or pull them up somehow?

Go ahead and read the Rooting for Dummies sticky. There is a section about flashing ROMs. You flash radios from recovery just the same. Follow the directions exactly, and make sure you make a nandroid backup. As for the files, just download them either on your computer or on your phone, and put them on the root of your sd card (/sdcard). Oh, and they are zip files that you should *not* unzip.

ok now one more question it said that it'll wipe my phone out. is that just apps or everthing? basically turning it back into a stock device?

Flashing a ROM? It will wipe out apps/settings, but it will not touch hboot or recovery. You still have root. Just make sure you make a nandroid backup first.

i have done a back up... so after a flash how do i restore from my backup things that i lost. i know i'll have to download apps again. but as far as settings go. does that include ringtones and such? pictures? etc....and what such i flash first? radios or the ROM? i have titanium backup... will that be wiped out also? i have things backed up there and almost allof my apps i backed up on my sd card through titainum back up.

Apps and settings can be restored through titanium backup. Personally, I just change all my settings manually when I switch roms because I know it won't cause any conflicts. Yes, it takes longer, but it helps avoid conflicts that are hard to troubleshoot. Anything you have on the sdcard will not be affected by wiping data and flashing a ROM. So pictures, etc. will not be touched.

If you're updating to 3.70, you should flash the ROM first, then flash the radios. You can do it in the same recovery session. Titanium backup, itself, will be wiped out, but you an just go download it again, and restore everything, which is stored on the sdcard.

Let me know if you need more in depth instructions on flashing the radios after an updated ROM. Basically, you flash them from recovery just like ROMs.

The apps that come on the phone stock...are they going to be wiped out as well? Or just apps I downloaded? Also.with this new ROM, will it have the swype that the stock 3.70 has? I'm thinking flashing the one you sent me earlier from xda....along with the radios combo. Will I be able to make different screens and themes as well with this new ROM?

Well, that stock ROM I linked to will have all the stock apps. Technically when you wipe, you get a stock ROM, but flashing a ROM over it will wipe all that out and replace it with whatever that ROM has. So, no need to worry about that. It's 3.70, and shouldn't have anything removed, so you'll get swype. What exactly do you mean by themes? If you mean the type that change system files, like what you get at xda, you can, but you need the deodexed version. Is that what you mean?

Allen, I don't know if you figured it out but I think you were asking how you get the ROM onto your phone. There are many ways. Probably the best way is to download it onto your computer and then push it over to your phone while it is mounted as a disk drive. You may ask, how do you do that? You can drag and drop in your computer's directory. Personally, I right click and "send to" and one of those options is that extra drive that shows up in that list....and that happens to be your phone.

I have even downloaded Roms over wifi or 3g over the air straight to my phone. In that case, the rom zip file will chow up in your /download folder in your recovery menu(on clockwork...no clue how that works in amon).

If you have a card reader you could plug it into your computer and send it to that card.

I am just giving you some examples. I am sure there are more ways to do it but from your computer to your phone is the preferred way although I have done it over the air...both wifi and 3g and it ended up working just fine although it takes a lot longer to download....especially on 3g.

I hope this clears it up if you were still wondering. I am not computer savvy at all and had that same question. When someone says ?copy it to the root of your SD card"...I was like....uuuuuhhhhhh......WHAT????....lol.....it is very basic now...but not back then.

yes that exactly what i meant aka....and flyj..man i have been so confused with that whole "put in root of card thing" but im good now. ill be posting when i get it all done. thanks to you all!!!!
