How do I use a phone that's not in service?

Hey, so I have a Motorola Droid 1, it's in practically brand new condition, as I got an insurance replacement like a week before getting it replaced. I'd like to be able to use it just for email and to use some of the apps and whatnot when I've got wifi, but it doesn't seem able to download anything from the app store, or update any of the existing apps, which means several of them don't work now, since they're old (I made this switch about a year ago.) It's running Android 2.2.2, and I'm just wondering if anybody has any tips on what updates might be necessary to get it to cooperate.
