Apps How do notifications work?

Alright...

My question is how exactly do notifications work? I don't mean the code inside an app to create a notification.

I mean how does one know they have a new email/SMS. I know email uses SMTP. But how exactly is the user notified of the new email? I read somewhere it is done using a broadcast, where the server simply sends out a broadcast to the device. If so, what exactly is a broadcast? What is a push notification? If not, please point me in the right direction.

Also how do apps like Whats app/Facebook actually receive new message. I know that whats app uses XMPP and Facebook messenger uses MQTT/XMPP. But how exactly does it get a new message when the app is not open? Does it keep checking the server for new messages in the background?

So am i completely in the wrong about this? or should i keep researching these topics.

Thanks in advance for any help.
