Help How do you change when Social Networking widgets sync data?

I cannot for the life of me find any settings for this. I swear I've read about people setting theres to only do it every couple of hours or so to help with battery life but I can't find anything for this. The only thing I've managed to find is an option to set it to only sync over WiFi. Forgive me if this has already been asked but I couldn't find any answers to this dilemma.

Oh and also, what exactly is considered "Background Data"? There's an option for enabling/disabling it and I wondered what the term encompasses.

Those options are in the settings for individual apps. Its sor of annoying that options are hidden away like that in android.
