Help How do you close running applications?

I know this might sound like a stupid question, but how do I close applications? Do I just press the "back" key? I know that if I hold down the home button, I get the last 6 applications that were opened, but does this mean that these 6 apps are currently open? Is it like pressing CTRL ALT DEL on a Windows PC? Or does it just show the last 6 apps that were opened?

Just press the home button.
Apps never really close though unless you force close them through a task manager like ATK or Android system info or if you are running froyo you can use the built in task manager.

if you press the home button the app will still be running. pressing the back button closes it.
