Help How do you delete mail in trash folder??

Clearly this topic has been mentioned numerous times before but I am unable to find a solution to the problem with the stock email app and its inability to allow us to globally, enmasse, all at once, delete the email that accumulates in the trash folder.

Desperately hoping that someone has a solution that I've overlooked. I've over 4,000 messages and I can't believe the only solution is to delete them again one-by-one despite having initially chosen to delete them. I've now discover they've merely been moved to this ever expanding trash folder. The only options I have when I long press Trash folder is Open it or Refresh it. Opening it and tapping the menu key doesn't show any delete or select all.

What were they thinking and why haven't they still caught a clue and provided this option?

Go to the trash folder for the e-mail accoutn you wish to clean and hit your menu key (the button next to the home key on the OV). It will bring up the options menu. Click select all. Wait for a few minutes as the app compiles the delete list. Then you should get a Message Box confirming if you wish to delete. Click okay, wait a few seconds for the app to clear out, and your trash bin should be cleaned.

If you have multiple e-mail accounts listed, you will have to rinse and repeat the process.
 
Thanks for trying but there is no "select all" option in the menu section. I have Refresh, Compose, Folders, Accounts and Account Settings.

Sorry the angry face isn't for you, but for Google. It shouldn't be this complicated.
 
Yeah, this bugs the crap out of me, too. Always has, always will until they fix it. You're quite right- shouldn't be complicated at all. :argh:
 
:)I just did it,u have to go to the web browser for gmail.u will be asked to sign in your Google account, once u sign in a menu pops up, hit Gmail, gmail account comes up hit the trash can,then click on each conversation u want to delete.at the top of the page it will ask (delete message forever? )click on it, bam they are gone!!!:)

Well, yeah, but the Gmail app should let you empty your trash folder...
 
I know it should be easier, at the bottom hit menu,hit help tab and follow the guide.it's not that hard!?
 
I know it isn't hard...I just don't like having to log in thru the browser when I read most of my mail on the app. It's really not a huge deal; we just like to complain sometimes. :D
 
My apologies if I wasn't clear the first time. This isn't a gmail account. These are pop 3 accounts for several domains I own. I view these emails from my phone while away from my desk and I'll download them onto my personal computer when I get back. I don't keep these emails on my phone at all...don't want to.

When these emails are "deleted" they are merely moved to a trash folder. There are not options to delete, wholesale, the emails in that trash folder. There should be.

I had 45mb of messages in that stock email application. The one account had 3K messages. No way anyone can double-delete that many one-by-one. I decided to go ahead and delete the accounts. When I got to the largest one the phone kept freezing. I went ahead and did a 'clear data' on the email application and started all over.

My phone is obviously processing things much more quickly now.

Google needs to fix this. In the meantime folks need to understand that 'delete' only means move to the trash folder. And then they need to make it a habit to go into the trash folder and 're-delete' those messages.

ADDENDUM: I finally realized that in my situation, where I do eventually download my email to a computer, I just need to never delete emails. Just read, answer, and ignore until I get a chance to process them on my computer which will then remove them from the servers. No deleting means no junk files to delete.
 
Kaybe - On my Nexus Galaxy ICS 4.1.1 I only get a settings option when I press menu. There is no select option. Does anyone one else have an idea as to how to delete 'all' messages in the trash bin at once? Any 3rd party apps?
 
kdispoto, sorry I misled you. On ICS 4.0 on my Galaxy Note 7, I open the trash, hit Menu which gives 4 options: Sort by, View mode, Settings and the bottom one is Delete all.
 
The trash items are listed chronologically. Click date check box to close the list, then hit delete key to delete all mails from that day. ?Later, delete on a daily basis.


But does anyone know why despite this, my trash boxstill shows one item, although it is empty. Galaxy Note 10.1
 
The way I finally did it was...go to Settings:Applications:Manage Applications:then click All at top so you can bring up the email app and then click on it and hit the clear data option that comes up. Now I didn't try to clear cache, so I don't know what the difference is but clear data clears all email boxes. This works for me because I keep all emails i want on my computer, not my phone, so I don't mind losing all emails on it.
 
Another very unhappy user: i look through all items in the trash before deleting to ensure that i don't accidentally delete some that were automatically filtered and sent to trash. On android, i would have to go over the old headings again and again because we simply can't delete them w/o having to log in web version.
 
This a Virgin programming issue. I deal w/ it quite successfully by using the K9 Mail app (free), which behaves the way we expect it to, complete w/ all batch functions. The other method I use is to log onto my Gmail acct from my computer, and then do the mass deletions from there, which is actually quite easy and fast, but K9 works well on the phone.
 
To empty Gmail trash in my Nexus 7, I downloaded The Gmail Viewer app from Google Play which deletes trash one at a time. This one app can work with two or three different Gmail accounts. So if you want an email name change without a reset, add a new account, do not uninstall the old account, just let it lie dormant. This new icon is a slanted Big Red M. Keep two icons or push the old icon over the cliff'. The old app lives on in your app inventory and can be resurrected at any time.

Better than The Gmail Viewer is the new Gmail OffLine shown with a Big Blue M and available in the Chrome Store. Multiple accounts in one InBox. Get your revised Gmail name in a new account without a reset and loss of your apps. Quickly empty trash one at a time. This app is not yet available for the Nexus 7 yet I am using it without the offline feature with a bookmark in the app Bookmark Home, Pressing on the bookmark gives me an icon shortcut on my home page. I found this after I wrote about The Gmail Viewer above.
 
I think I accidentally found the answer. I hit Refresh in the Trash folder and that has removed most of the contents. Over 400 down to 23. I am using POP3 like the OP.

If there is no select-all, hit delete and check all of the emails you wish to delete and delete

Select your trash folder, hit the menu key, then select account settings, under server settings, click incoming settings, at the bottom where it says delete email from server, select when i delete from inbox. then refresh and re-sync.:)
