Help How do you force the default photo viewer to high res?

I like the default photo viewer except that when you select a photo it shows a low-res version until you zoom in. You can double tap or you can do the fingers-apart motion just a little bit and then it switches to high-res view of the photo.

a) is there a way to make the app always show high res?
b) is there a better photo viewer replacement that shows in high res?
