Root How do you know phone is rooted

Once a phone is rooted does kernel version at Setting -> about phone change? or how do you find out if you want to know the status?

Open up your app drawer and if you see a little app called superuser (app looks like a android with an eye patch and cross bones ) If you see this then you successfully rooted!
