How do you pick the right Android device?

I'm allergic to monthly fees and high prices, so I don't want a smart phone, nor want to pay top dollar. But I prefer some portability. There's this music performance/education app that runs on 'droid and iOS only, so I can't download it to my laptop. Thus, I'm contemplating my first ever android device.

The samsung galaxy 4.2 appealed, except that it's android 2.3 and I fear being crippled by the old OS. Google's Nexus 7 appealed for being 4.1, but it has no memory expansion capabilities and I prefer smaller than 7". Looks like either can be had for $200, which I can manage, barely.

Some guidance and suggestions would be truly appreciated!

Have you looked into the Galaxy players? They are wifi only but in a phone form factor (think iPod touch). Might be that middle ground if you don't want a data plan on your cell contract.

As I wrote, I looked at the Galaxy 4.2, but it's only running Android 2.3. I fear that will be a limitation. Can you direct me to a site where all the Galaxy players are compared? Samsung's website seems to require that I already know the product names.

Thanks!

Sorry, I'm only familiar with the product line, not the models themselves. Didn't recognize the reference.:o:rolleyes::D

So long as the app you are looking to use is compatible with Gingerbread, I wouldn't worry as most apps are compatible with Froyo and above. Also, you mentioned the N7 but were hesitant on the size. I'm replying on one now, and love it. Price for specs it can't be beat IMO.
