Help How do you setup a share folder for sharing over wifi

It seems possible to setup a shared folder but I can't find any directions on it and none of my current shares show on the phone. Does any know how to do this or if it's even possible. I would love to transfer stuff without plugging in the phone.
 
I know it's easy with estrong. If you can set it up correctly on the PC, that's 3/4 of the process.

I don't have my phone with my right now, but go into estrong, choose LAN and then have it scan for shares.

It's definitely doable.

I know someone also said it was available in astro.
 
I never just tried to set up a share on the phone, but swiFTP works nice over wifi. Turns your phone into a FTP server, I use that to push/re arrange/delete files to my phone from the pc. Its free in the market.
The global proxy thing works well to actually.

edit: yeah if your looking for files on the pc from your phone estrongs is what I use.

I have been using the stock file manager to go between the phone and a network backup drive without any setup at all. I have not been able to get it to connect to any computers on my network though. It always asks for a password and the computer password doesn't work.
 
Download Astro File Manager and the SMB module. Both are free, and setting up a network share is a breeze.

The only thing I've noticed is the file transfer pauses if you lock the screen. So go on the internet or something while the file is coming in. But be prepared to wait -- I haven't timed it, but the network file transfer isn't blowing away any speed records.
 
thanks for all the info I didn't even think about using a file manager to see the shares Duh. Drop box is also a good idea.

Hmmm I'll have to try that just to see, the ftp transfers were pretty fast, didn't time them either but didnt seem to take much longer than transferring from pc to pc.
 
Searching this forum I did not found elegant solution to file/folder sharing. I can't see dropbox or any other web/cloud application as a neat and safe way of doing networking.
Being a Unix flavor, with android you will need Samba client to browse your Windows or Linux computer from your device. Astro FS with Samba add on, esfile explorer or other SMB enabled file manager will do.

To enable sharing of a folder located on your android you need Samba server. It is preferred method of connecting to your android device because it's much faster and it's easier to browse and manage files from your PC. FTP or WEB server type of sharing is not a long term solution because your android pick up the IP address from your DHCP server (usually it's your router) and sooner or later different IP address will be assigned to your unit, meaning you have to configure FTP or WEB server over... until IP changes again... and again... Samba assigns NETBIOS type of a hostname to your device that will show up in network browser on other computers. (see attachment). The only drawback is that your android phone must be 'rooted'. Simply, gaining superuser privilege on your device, what many of us did the first day we got our hands on the device anyway.

Dropbox is quite different though - for starters, it's designed to share across the Internet, not the LAN. Second of all, sharing over LAN also leads to streaming files etc.

ES Explorer did work for me and is very handy.
 
Wondering why when I plug in my inferior coby kyros to my toshiba laptop it isn't a nice little inferior computer that I could have right there. Then click and drag. I guess I was spoiled during the old days of apple. Why isn't my coby a folder with numerous other folders branching from it when I plug it into my toshiba? The microprocessor on the toshiba could easily do it. Then when I do something on my toshiba the coby might not be able to do it. This is expected, not all these other issues. Doesn't follow my conscience most programs they're making these days.
 
On your Droid 3 connected over WiFi to Windows XP:

1. Select "Files" to launch the File Manger.
2. Select +Add Server
3. Select [an IP Address or simply select] "Scan for server"
4. You should now see a folder indicating something like "Unknown Group"
5. Select this or some other legitimate named group.
6. You should now see the IP address of your PC. Select it.
7. If you see "Logon Failure -- Re-enter authentication info" click OK.
8. Type User name "Guest" AND Password "Guest" (not case sensitive).
9. You should now see every folder on your PC incl. Printers.
10. You can only access shared folders, but you can still see all devices.
11. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents.
(For XP)

On your XP PC:
1. Place .apk, .mp4, .mp3, etc. files into:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

Click on any file and it will load up wireless.

One caveat I noticed was that the entire file must load first, so no streaming.
This is great way to grab .apk files for developers.

is the streaming of video files possible in android froyo via wifi setup ?
after reading above - not sure if anyone succeeded in doing that !
i have android froyo tablet - how do i stream my video from my win PC to it ?
my PC is connected to usb drives and folder from usb drives are shared - i can do that with windows PC -> windows tablet but not to android tablet ...please help

im not trying to hijack, but this seems relevant.

does anyone know how to share a folder with only certain android users on my network?

I can find info to do it with two windows machines. from what i understand you have to create the user name of the viewing machine in the computer that hosts the folder. but how would I do that with an androd device.

when I right click computer/manage/shared folders/shares.
then right click a folder/properties/share permissions/add/advanced/find now.
i get a list of user types but i have no idea how to add just one android device or what to type in as the name

Edit: I have tried using the name of my phone on an evo 3d i went to settings/about phone/phone identity. but i figured that wouldnt work.
