How does Android handle lock-screen notifications?

I know I keep asking questions about Android, but I really want to make sure switching from iOS is the right decision before I go out and buy a Nexus 4.

Anyway, one the the things I really like about iOS is the way it handles notifications. Not only is there a notification menu, but notifications can be viewed from the lock-screen. For example, if someone sends me a message on Facebook, I get a lock-screen notification right then and there. It makes everything very convenient as I don't have to refresh the app or search around in my notification menu. I just want to see if Android can do that also. So like, in Android, if someone sends you a message on Facebook, can you set notifications so that you can see that notification that someone messaged you from the lock-screen? Thank youuuuu!

Lockscreen notifications existed on Android before it did on iOS, however how it is handled depends on the manufacturer of the device, as each manufacturer customizes Android to its own liking. I cannot speak for other manufacturers, but on Samsung, the stock lockscreen handles the notifications for Calls, SMS and Emails. But not other apps. The notifications would show up in the notification bar on the top of the screen which you pull down to view (iOS blatantly copied it on iOS5, so it should be familiar to you how to use it since they did not bother to change anything).

However, the great thing about Android is that if the stock lockscreen does not suit you, you can put another lockscreen on your device. One of the most recommended lockscreen si Widgetlocker from the PlayStore. You can put any widgets on it, so you can put the MissedIt! widget on it to be able to show you notifications from all your apps on the lockscreen itself. You can also add weather, calendar, or even your twitter feed on your lockscreen using it.
