How does chrome work so fast on EDGE?

Hi all,
I have a query about the performance of chrome when run in bandwidth saving nice on 2G / EDGE.
When I first shifted to chrome on my Moto G I thought of running it on 2G instead of 3G. Right away I noticed a significant hike in speed and page rendering when compared to a comparable a Samsung phone at the same price point.
With that phone any serious surfing needed me to use the 3G. With chrome on Moto I was able to do it all on 2G !
My question is - is this possible because of the chrome bandwidth saving mode or does it have something to do with the way chrome is designed to work with moto ?
Thanks!

It's because in bandwidth saver mode most of the work is done on Googles servers, your device only displays the content Opera does this as well as well as I'm sure some other browsers
