Help How does NFC work?

If I don't have a internet connection (this is a tablet) ho does NFC work? Can I still use it without a data or WiFi connection? Little confused y they would put this feature on a tablet that is not 3g or 4g ready

It is exactly like reading a mag stripe on a credit card, but the NFC readers don't work half the time, unlike the mag stripe readers which seem to work close to 99% of the time, (and the other half of the time the clerk has no idea how to treat the NFC transaction like a credit card) thus making swiping a credit card thousands of times more convenient than using NFC :-). No internet connection should be needed if you actually have NFC already set up and activated and you happen to get a reader that works.

NFC is a short range wireless communication method more closely related to Bluetooth then it is to a magnetic stripe on a credit card. Bluetooth has a longer range, as much as 50 meters, while NFC range maxes out at about 7.5 inches but works more optimally at a distance of about 1.5 inches.

Because of the shorter range, NFC uses much less power and is also less susceptible to interception by a 3rd party since that 3rd party would need to be in very close proximity.

I would still find it weird if I tried to use my tablet as a credit card replacement. The extra work of having to carry a tablet as opposed to a credit card makes no sense to me lol. Phone, maybe. Tablet, nope.

I use NFC to turn on/off wifi as I leave my house

I use it to set my alarm at night when i place my phone on my nightstand

I use it to give guests my WiFi information to connect to the secured network, simply tap their phone to my wireless router and they're connecting

OK so how do you do that? Obviously you don't have a pay pass station at your door to read the NFC so what does it read? Or does it use GPS?

Google wallet is the only thing that uses paypass. You can use NFC without using google wallet.

You can use NFC to do various things with a free app called NFC task launcher and re-writable NFC tags

1) NFC tag under lightswitch plate that toggles WIFI. Tap as I come and leave the house.

2) NFC tag on the underside of my nightstand that gets triggered to set an alarm when I place my phone on my nightstand near my bed

3) NFC Tag on Wifi Router gives them network name and password, as well as toggling WiFi ON

Google use the Nexus devices as a platform for promoting stuff rather than because they desparately want to get into the mobile device market. It would make sense that they build NFC into the Nexus 7 even though they don't seriously think people will carry it around in their pocket.

NFC is in the current Nexus phone and will no doubt be in the imminent Nexus 5 "Galaxy Note 2-a-like" (if you believe the rumours :-).

I setup Google Wallet on my N7 primarily to get the $10 credit. I then used the credit to buy lunch for my daughter and I at McDonald's. Doubt I will use Google Wallet on my N7 ever again as it's just as easy to swipe my debit card to pay as it is to tap the NFC tag with the tablet. I'm far more likely to have my debit card with me when purchasing something than my N7.

I'll have to look into the NFC Task launcher app. Where do you get the NFC tags?

I got mine from tagsfordroid.com I believe

There may be cheaper ones, but I like that these are re-writable and come with Andy on them

Thanks for the info on where to get the tags. I already googled around and ordered some from tagstand.com (5 for $5 + shipping).

After checking tagsforandroid.com, I ordered a couple from there as well since they claim 1K storage (768 bytes) whereas the tagstand ones I ordered are only 144 bytes.

Oh for sure. I have Galaxy Nexus as well as my Nexus 7 so I'm well aware of the awesome features from device to device. I would much rather use my phone for Google Wallet than my tablet though
