How does one typically acquire ringtones and gets them on the phone ?

Do I use the Play store app to find packages of rings tones or where do I download them ? or do I download packages online with PC and then xfer them to the phone with a USB wire ? Thanks
 
Zedge is a good starting point but if you have your favourite music as (say) an mp3 file you can drop them into a folder on the phone. They'll be recognised and appear as option when selecting your tones. At least, they do for ringtones and notification sounds on my Galaxy Note 2.
 
Another option is to use an app like Ring Droid which allows you to take a portion of a song you already have on your device and turn it into a ringtone/notification/alarm
 
The above are good suggestions. However, I typically avoid installing apps when there is another way. I search for and sideload ringtones from mobile9.
 
I just copy audio files into /sdcard/Ringtones. If I need to edit them first I use a computer rather than a phone app, though I'm sure those exist too.
 
I also copy. I use a lot of MID as I have a library full. Easiest to install when you had to use BitPim (size limited. 4 minute MID might be 17k.)
Some phones offer to set an MP3 as a ringtone. I can determine the length of the ring to cut on the Oppo.
