How does the notify once feature in Gmail work?

In my Gmail app, I want that it notifies me of every new e-mail message as soon as it arrives. I have my Gmail account set to sync in the background and to auto-sync. All the syncing for Gmail is turned on.

But if I want Gmail to notify me for every new message as soon as it arrives, how should the settings be set? Should the checkbox for "Notify once - Notify once for new email, not for every new message" be checked or unchecked?

It should be unchecked.

I just installed the latest version of the Gmail app (2.3.5) and I have set this option to unchecked but now I don't receive any notification at all when an email arrives.
If I check it then I do get the notification but only once and not for subsequent emails.

Have they broken this setting or is it just my phone?
