Help How hard would this be to do?

I may be getting a S3 soon, and was hoping to do the following two things (in order of priority):

1. Make it work with Orange UK (only Vodafone at the moment).

2. Put on a 'clean' Jelly Bean set up instead of the Samsung version that it will have.

How hard would these two be to do? I've never rooted or anything, though I know Android well.

Thanks :)

I can't help you with putting it on Orange, as I'm on the other side of the pond. But rooting and installing an AOSP build is fairly straightforward. Of course, you could just put a launcher on it like Nova or Apex, which resemble ICS/JellyBean pretty effectively, and not deal with it all.

1. It will depend which firmware the phone comes shipped with. If it has the alf1 firmware you will be able to root and then SIM unlock using the aim unlock app from here
Android Applications | Project Voodoo
If it comes shipped with the blg3 firmware this method probably won't work.

Sim unlocking is fine but if you mean putting aosp / vanilla on it instead of Samsung, yeah its easy enough but a waste of a phone. Get the gnex. The samsung rom is what makes the s3. Read the "coolest feature" thread to see why

I have a gnex just now but am getting a s3 through work, so was tempted to unlock it so I could put it on my network and use it my only phone instead of having two. I'm willing to give the samsung rom a try though. Was only thinking of putting JB on it as it's all I know and I love it!

yea i recommend staying on a Samsung based ROM. Pure AOSP is nice, but there are many features in touchwiz that are really nice. You can make it look AOSP, and the leaked jellybean build from AT&T is pretty nice so far

Search the Internet, you can unlock the SIM on these quite easily (it may even be through Kies)

Also do what I did, keep the Touchwiz rom but download Nova Launcher and the Jelly Bean theme and you have the best of both worlds.
Mine looks like stock JB but still has all the great features of Touchwiz.

Regarding your first point, do you want to get the 32gb version? Because that's the only one (I think) of the three that is locked to Vodafone. I've got the 16gb version on T-mobile and I know that I could have stayed with Orange (my previous provider) if I wanted to.

Well I have the device now, it says there are 10gb left so I am assuming it's the 16gb one! But I can't try putting in my Orange sim yet because it is a full size whereas S3 requires the mini. Haha. :/

Go to a cell phone shop and they will cut it for you.

I've got the Jelly Bean Nova thing running now, which is nice. What exactly are these extra samsung-only features? Would be nice to have a look and see!

Iirc the international S3 was fully unlocked to begin with?

Have orange gone and bloated theirs out & locked them?

Thanks!

There are a couple Vodafone apps on the phone so I guess it's been a bit bloated. Hopefully not locked (not cut my sim card yet). Am hoping to disable loads of apps anyway, don't want all these Samsung bloat apps!
