Help How is 5GB of data usage in ONE DAY possible???

 I have T-Mobile and am using the Samsung Vibrant... they have a 5GB cap before they "decrease" your data speed... the first month I received a text message alert saying I had reached 5GB on the THIRD day... which really was a pooper bc i could BARELY even load a page AT ALL... this new month I received the text message alert on the SECOND day =O

i just dont understand how i could manage that... I DO NOT DOWNLOAD MOVIES... maybe watch a FEW youtube vids n download about 5-10 games/apps a month... is there some kind of setting that is "leaking" data usage???

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

Any apps that have background notifications like twitter and gmail? Doubt very much they consume massive amounts of data but I had a similar problem with O2.

no twitter or gmail... idk if ne other program is doing it... how would i be able to know which apps do or how to turn on/off automatic notifications on specific apps w/out goin into each one of them

5GB is an enormous amount of data for one day (even for one month) so very unlikely if not impossible to use that amount of data in one day under normal usage. If you have an online account you may want to check your usage and see when it is happening,if not I would call my carrier right away.

If T-mobile won't give you a proper solution to this problem, tell them you want to return the phone. It looks like you are in your 14day return time frame. This alone should motivate them to look into it. Otherwise they will just turn a blind eye.

Did you install any cracked app? That might be issue.
I have 4 GB quota, and I use my phone with my laptop. So, actually if you don't download movies or lots of apps, it is a little hard to exceed 4 GB.
But possible reasons to me:
-You might have used cracked apps, and they did something bad.
-Some apps downloaded lots of data. Either advertisement or additional datas needed for the app. Some games download additional data. And some sound apps download high quality sound files later.
-You might have downloaded lots of apps.
-If you use Mobile AP without a password, some naughty people might have used it while you were using it.

Hi guys

I believe seriously that there is a huge security leak with android.
I am using pda's for a long time and I used WM until now.
I don't say that WM was good nor I was happy with WM but!

with my sgs now I had to increase 2 times my data package.
previously I was using 100MB/month where I could put my quite frequent e-mail traffic
and a normal usage of web / chat.
With sgs I had to increase to 250MB then to 1GB right now per month.
and I have used them aswell almost finishing the first month.
While I think I have not changed my behaviour much...

what about the number of app you have installed? did that number change?

Install "Stats Free" from the market and check to see how much data you are using. I would also suggest switching to wifi whenever is possible.

Get a 3G counter app. E.g. 3G watchdog or dodol phone usage. Monitor how many data you are actually using per day. It could be a problem on your carrier's server. It has happened before.

I have a 12GB data plan with my carrier. I don't download movies but I do install quite a number of games, have email notifications (gmail, yahoo, and hotmail), use facebook frequently, and notify my whereabouts using foursquare. Despite all the activities, I've never managed to exceed 1GB of data usage for the past 2 months since I signed up for a data plan in Sept. I think maybe there's a problem with the apps you've installed on your phone, rather than a security leakage with Android?

thanks sooo much... i deleted yahoo mail n my internet ran alot faster and i also downloaded 3g Watchdog and in one day i only used 1.1% of 5GB... then i downloaded yahoo mail again to see ne difference and it jumped to like 1.4%... so indeed this was def the cause

thanks again!!! =)

t-mobile employees need to be trained ALOT more tho =/

Seems to me that your telco has got it wrong. If possible please check with someone else who is on the same plan. 5GB on a single day could not be right.

Do you have RSS apps? I once had similar (in small scale) problem due to an RSS feed reader which downloaded and cashed all the articles (thus violating the basic need for RSS :) )

In any case 5Gb usage for in 2 days is simply difficult to accept. You should contact your service provider and ask them to check their records.

Yahoo mail was not the culprit. The app does schedule automatic updates to see if you have mail every 15 minutes or so, but this uses a negligible amount of data each month.

The reason your usage "jumped" from 1.1% to 1.4% is because 0.3% of 5Gb = 15Mb, which is the size of the app. The change in usage was simply because you downloaded an app, not the result of anything the app was doing.

5 GBs within three days is conceivable if perhaps someone else is streaming/downloading high def videos. Is there anyone in your household also on your T-Mobile account?
But if you're the only one, open your Vibrant's Settings >> Data usage and see scroll down to see what apps are listed that are using your mobile data.
Also, you should be able to log into your T-Mobile account through its online page and access your things like your billing info, data usage, devices, etc. Check to see if something there might indicate what's going on.

I accidentally used like 5GB of data once when I redownloaded all my Spotify playlists and forgot to turn on WiFi. So, it's pretty easy to do :) But can't you just go to Settings > Data Usage to see what is using all your data?
