I have been using Otterbox Defender cases for various phones for several years. They have done their jobs well in that I have dropped my phone numerous times with no harm done to them.
The earlier Otterbox belt clips were a bit of a problem: I broke three or four of them. The rubber outer shell of the three-piece Defender case, however, wears stretched out until it becomes a problem after about eight months of regular use.
The good news is that the newer Defender series (at least for my current phone, the Galaxy S4) allows one to order just one piece, making replacing the outer cover (or changing colors) a lot cheaper.
I was pleased to find that my Otterbox was pretty chemical-proof. The sprays I use at work can dissolve many plastics, and in fact, the inner shell pieces are susceptible. However, the rubber cover is proof against it, and so is the touchscreen membrane.
So my case shows little spots on the few exposed parts of the inner case from overspray, but is not all that noticeable.
