Help How long??

Does anyone know how many hours an android can run an motion detector camera app if it's connected to a power supply? I tried it last night outdoors from 9pm to 8am and I didn't receive email picture notifications from the app after 3am which makes it 6 hours and when I checked my phone in the morning it was turned off even though I connected it to a power supply. Did it overheat, i mean it was kind of chilly last night?

I can't think of any limit that would be intrinsic to the OS. If the app required the screen to be on but wasn't able to keep it on itself and you weren't able to set a timeout longer than 6 hours, then that (or some other similarly convoluted mixture of factors) could explain the monitor stopping, but not the phone turning off.

The phone being turned off could indicate really serious overheating. Being on charge will generate heat itself, as will running the camera continuously and processing the images, so I guess that's a possibility. If you have a monitoring app that can show the battery temperature history (something like GSam Battery Monitor) you might be able to tell. Or just let it run for a couple of hours then go look at it and see whether it is getting hot?

thanks for the reply, the app runs without a time limit and the screen turns off once the camera is activated. I also forgot to mention that the phone was in a plastic tv remote case to protect it from unexpected rain, will that cause the phone to overheat since it doesn't have much space to breathe??

Any case will slow heat transfer from the phone to the environment. It doesn't sound likely that this case will be particularly tight, but I guess it will slow convection. So it could add to heat retention, but we aren't sure yet that that is the problem.
