This new news post got me thinking, and the discussion on there has gone awry.

I am 27, on AT&T. My bill cycles on the 9th and as if right now Ive used 632.3 of my 2g. I read the news, check the weather, stream music on my commute, email, facebook, all on my data pack. (I also do all these things on my wifi.) I dont really stream movies from my phone. I very very rarely go over 1gb. I havent even bothered to add the extra gig for $5. Plus I have all my stuff set to update frequently when Im not on the clock at my job. I turn my data off in my pocket because it kills my battery.

I don't really use to much. I only use WiFi at home and I never download/ stream music or videos on the go except the odd YouTube video because 3G is usually too slow and frustrating. Probably about 200 - 500MB per month.
I'm on 1GB/ month on my tariff and on Three UK

I tether a lot, so you can peg me in for at least 500mb a day. There was a month where Onavo told me I used up 37GB for that month. LOL.

Globe Phils. :D

Hey Slipmagt! i am an AT&T'ian also, i live on wi-fi and dare to even 'touch' one att byte when avoidable. But ive noticed lately that i have to Close and Restart my wifi connection at home (meaning, im floating on ATT data). and sometimes wonder if some "push" was sent to my device to trip my wi-fi so att data count starts chopping away.

Look it up on the web. I've read that carriers are trying to offload onto wifi. My friend who has Sprint, just got an update to her EVO that somehow used wifi and she would be billed for it.

TMO has always billed for wifi, but for voice and text only on UMA enabled phones. Meaning calls and texts were counted against your bucket. TMO explained you were still using their switching for voice - it wasn't internet calling like Skype.

For myself, I have a 2G plan and rarely use it. I keep it since you need some data when starting to root a phone and the phone doesn't have wifi service yet. I will check weather, mail and look something up if I need to. Mostly use my own wifi.

Yep,and my rant (oops wrong discussion) is that i WANT to use wi-fi because i just have gotten so tired of dealing with discrepancies on ATT. Then when i am browsing or perhaps using an app that need data connection, I find myself on ATT juice and my wi-fi got tripped (if that makes sense).

I then have to "turn" my wifi off (phone menu) and back on again for it to reconnect. the "offtime" is what i hate to use unless i am not around wifi, so i try to save it till then. Id rather hit my data when i have no other choice.

Can't using a custom ROM fix that?

I've read that it can ... i just haven't rooted this particluar device.. My prev STREEK was rooted, but the screen broke and was just as cheap to buy a whole new streek (just a few months ago) than the $$$ screen/kit

(BUT will replace that screen one day)

My old banger the HTC Legend never seems to tether properly, probably would tether a lot if it would

I used to use a MiFi device & break 2gb easily if streaming music. That's not something I'd normally do, it's just pouring money down the drain! Without streaming (not including youtube clips) & some tethering I'd get close to the 1gb / month.

Many mobile broadband packages have uncapped speeds vs phone data plans & I believe I've been throttled when viewing youtube on my phone. But there are so many variables to pin this down; better network? On the move? In a good signal area? Being throttled? Uncapped speeds to begin with? Your internet provider having problems, maintenance, etc etc etc?

I wonder how many people give up trying to load something because of throttling or bad signal - thus saving more of their data plan?

So it's not only how much data we use, it's the quality of service.

I have given up on youtube videos, and usually just email the link to myself to watch on my computer. Youtube have never really worked on my phone, I typically have a good signal and good speed at the time.

It's interesting because an app like dropbox can transfer well but youtube often suffers. Sure they're different apps so there must be different peak times for people watching video compared to those just moving files?

Wireless carriers seek to "offload" customers

If the carriers are somehow detecting your wifi and trying to tie it to their service - that is just plain wrong. This article said public hotspots. I have hotspot ability on the Nexus S. Would a carrier deem that public wifi?

Like Rico, I'd be switching the service off and on to keep carrier out of it. I can also pull the SIM card.

I'd have to ask a Sprint user about the last update on the Evo. My friend isn't technical and she was ranting about Sprint and her wifi at home. She's been a loyal customer of Sprint since before they were Sprint. She's now talking about Boost Mobile so she must be fairly PO'd. I just told her to wait until subsidized phones were paid off so no ETF.

RE:' If the carriers are somehow detecting your wifi and trying to tie it to their service - that is just plain wrong'

If this is true, the two guilty harlots (Ma Bell who will sleep with anyone and Charlotte The Big RED "V" Harlot") are as low as they can get next to becoming the next "ENRON"!

I mean, here we are PaYING for a service and getting little to nothing! Then when the very devils turn around and "sneak into the back door" of OUR DSL / wi-fi service we are also paying for.

THE Two Harlots get away with taking our money and aint giving us a "good time" then ontop of that, USING OUR services that has nothing to do with them , to offload their network!

WHERES FCC!?! WHERES DOJ!!! .... enuff is enuff!

(ok i admit... that shooda been posted in the rant folder... heh)

I am not accusing any carrier of doing this. I do know TMO will use your minutes if you make a call with wifi using UMA. That is logical as you are using their voice service rather than an internet connection or VOIP. It's still your wifi but going through their voice network.. I've used it where I've had wifi and no network signal. They state it whenever you buy a UMA enabled phone.

I've used Skype and now Viber over wifi. I have network turned off.

All I have seen is that carriers are trying to find ways to offload data to public wifi. Nothing more. I asked if it was possible for a carrier to detect your ISP. I have tethering and portable hot spot on my Nexus. (I don't use it).

I'd like to know how a portable hot spot would be recognized. I can see all my neighbors' wifi.
You are supposed to use WEP or WAP so there would have to be some kind of collusion which I doubt.

I see nothing like this on the Nexus, but I'm rooted and wouldn't accept a download without checking it out first. There will be blogs, rumors, whatever surfacing about networks and wifi in the next couple of weeks.

I think my friend's Sprint rant was similar to your complaint. Something about wifi showed up on her phone after a Sprint update. She actually called Sprint about it and apparently got an answer she didn't like. She has unlimited everything so data usage didn't bother her. She did mention something about Sprint and her personal wifi which upset her since she's paying for unlimited.

What concerns me more is what drove me to rooting. Apps that turned themselves on and searched for data in the background even if you never enabled them.

5-7GB, data cap is 2.5GB but the speed never slows down as they say it should past the cap.

.

UMA is not common in the UK, but really, that's a bit cheeky of them if you're calling through your own broadband at the first instance, but it goes through a carriers servers so they know you used WiFi to do it. I can see that dying a slow death if we can just use Viber et al, without this 'middle man'.

I think carriers should only do this IF they provide an urban cloud WiFi network that's free if you're already a customer of their broadband and/or phone network (like o2 do in the UK).

Using your minutes for voice only via wifi on network isn't really cheeky. I've got to places where NO carrier has a signal, but I can get wifi. This now has to be converted to the carriers network especially for voice. It sounds worse than it is - but a TMO voice customer to TMO voice customer is usually unlimited anyway. You get charged for roaming by any carrier.

I can pull my SIM out and just use my wifi for data with no charge, but unless I use Skype or its ilk, I can't make a voice call. I can use GV, but I don't happen to like it. I've got it since the Nexus isn't a TMO phone but only for emergencies. It's frozen with TB. I think I had to put in my cell number for GV anyway to get a GV number.
