How to add a picture to my contacts?

Hey guys, so I'm trying to add pictures to my contacts. Right now, I've found that you can select a picture from your gallery > set as contact icon > [choose the contact] > save.. however, the pictures don't show up.. it's as if nothing happened, but when I try to do it again (click set as contact icon, and then I'm shown my list of contacts), THEN the picture shows up, but only at that time.

So, how can I make this a permanent change? lol
