How to avoid data charges?

Being new to all things Android I have a question for you kind folks.

I am about to visit France for a week or so and I wish to avoid any charges for data transfer. I want to have access to 3G for call purposes and wifi on my Galaxy S2 but how do I switch off the data transfer?

Most phones have under settings a way to turn off both DATA ROAMING and DATA ALWAYS ON. Check those in the Settings---Wireless and Networks.

on android phones...

you can turn off any radio you do not wish to use.
