How to back-up, and add contacts to groups

I have had my HTC Amaze 4G for 3 days now. Seems pretty darn awesome.
The folks at the T-Mobile store copied my contacts from my old phone to the new HTC Amaze 4G.

However being new to Android and smart phones in general, I am having trouble finding a way to back-up my phones info. I downloaded HTC Sync, but there is no way to edit the info as there was with my Nokia software.

Also in figuring out how to put my contacts into groups. I can find the groups, but nothing there to allow me to import a contact. I go to contacts and nothing there to add to a group. Frustrating, but I am sure there is a simple answer somewhere.

The easiest way for me is to log in to your google account on a PC, and go to gmail. Edit the contacts the way you want them on your phone. Then when you go to your contacts on your phone, choose to only show the ones listed on your google account. Then any you add to your phone will also be added to your google account, and they are backed up online.

Make sense?
