Help how to back up apps to an external sd card

Hey guys, just about ready to upgrade to 2.2 ..however need to backup the apps I have put in to my external sd card.... how do i do it.. pls suggest...newbie to android...

For market apps, Astro file manager will do the job. For preinstalled apps, you need a rooted phone and titanium backup.
