How to Backup your phone (apps and data)

There seems to be alot of confusion here as to the proper way to make a backup of your apps and data before updating to a different software version so here's an easy guide on how to do so.

Go to the Market and download
MyBackup or MyBackup*Root (only if you're rooted)

To back up your applications and media:

Open app and select "backup", then select "applications & media", then select "local (/mnt/sdcard).

If your photos are already saved to your sdcard like mine (by default) then just check the box in front of "apps", but if you have pics saved to your phones internal storage then also check the box in front of "photos".

Then you have the option of naming this backup, it's already named AppsMedia_(current date), you can either leave it like that or name it something else.

Then select the type of back up....

APK's - This will save only the file needed to restore the app, no data.
Data - This will only save the data for said app, app won't be restored.
APK's + Data - Will save both of the above

Select APK's + Data

After you make your selection, the app will do the rest. Just make sure you remember the name of your backup, it will be located at /sdcard/rerware/MyBackup/AllAppsBackups/(name of your backup).

Do not be concerned if you see something to the effect of "Market link not saved/found" when the backup confirmation screen is shown at the end.

To backup your phone data.....

When updating to a new version of Android (2.1 to 2.3), I highly suggest you DON'T backup any system settings/data as it can cause conflicts due to the differences in the two. The only phone data I can confirm is ok to restore is Bookmarks, SMS, MMS, Call Log. I have not tried restoring any other phone data so if you do so it is at your own risk.

Open the app and select "backup", then select "data", then select "Local (/mnt/sdcard).

Check the boxes of the items you'd like to backup

*Choosing "Contacts" is a waste of time as they will not be restored, not sure why, but that's how it is.

Confirm or rename the name of this backup, if you use the same name as you did when naming your apps backup, this one will overwrite that one. Click "ok" when done and the app will do the rest.

To restore your apps and media

You will have to go back to the market and download the backup app again.

Open app and select "Restore", then select "Applications & Media", then select "Local (/mnt/sdcard)" then select the name of the backup you want to restore.

Then select APK's (we will restore the data for the apps later) and the app will do the rest.

Do not be concerned if you see something to the effect of "Market link not saved/found/restored" when the restore confirmation screen is shown at the end.

Go back to the main menu and again select "Restore", then select "Applications & Media", then select "Local (/mnt/sdcard)" then select the name of the backup you want to restore.

This time select "Data", and the app will do the rest.

*It is always best to restore as little data as possible from previous versions of Android. That being said, I did not encounter any problems at all by restoring all of my app data from 2.1 once I upgraded to 2.3.

DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE YET

To restore your phone data

From the main menu in the app, select "Restore", then select "Data", then select "Local (/mnt/sdcard)", then select the name of the backup you want to restore and the app will do the rest.

Once that's done, close the app and promptly reboot your phone
