Is there a safe and easy way to change the bootani?

Yea just download which ever one you want. Try to make sure the device its from has the same screen size. Then copy boot animation.zip to system/media. And if you want boot sounds find one that's an ogg file and rename it to PowerOn.ogg and place it in system/media/audio/ui

There's a bunch of apps that will do it for you. Plus it shows you the bootani before you apply and you can pick one out of hundreds in the database. When asked about screen size just click phone size (if said app asks).
