How to change default app for epub files?

EPUB file associations/default app

My phone is Android 10, Google Pixel 3a.

I've had to change ereader apps a few times lately for various reasons and I cannot find through online searches or poking through my settings how to either change the default app for opening epub files to my present ereader or to get it to go back to the system behaviour I preferred from the past, asking me when I go to open a file which app I want to open it with. Right now it wants to open them in the Overdrive program for library books. It is quite awkward to try to import individual titles into my preferred ereader vs. opening them directly from the Downloads folder.

(These are not DRMd ebooks but public domain ones, so I am not opening in a proprietary ereader.)

Try going to the app info for the overdrive app. Go to advanced, open by default, clear defaults.

You may possibly have to do this for another related app as well. But once you clear the defaults for the app that the file type is associated with it should prompt you again with which app you'd like to use.

Thanks for your reply. The puzzling thing is that under the Overdrive app it says under Other Defaults: no defaults set. I wish that Android had the same kind of file extension/association that Windows has, where you scroll to the file type and select the application you want to give the primary association to.

I just deleted the Overdrive app from my phone and now the choice to open epubs in the app of my choice has returned. I hope if I reinstall Overdrive the unwanted default behaviour doesn't come back. Thanks again.

Let us know if it works!
