I have purchased a new Phone.( ICS 4.0.4)

I want to copy all contacts from my old phone.(android 2.3)

What is easiest and quick solution ?

export contacts there is a setting in the contact menu to pretty much zip them all then you can copy them to the new phone and use its contact settings to add the file and bam =]

Are your contacts backed up to cloud? Simply log in on your new phone and the contacts will automatically be downloaded.

not backed up yet... How to do this ?
Please tell me where do I get menu "back up contacts to cloud" and "restore contacts from cloud" in phone ?

Also ,...Is it possible to delete contacts from cloud ? Where to login and delete contacts from cloud ?

not clear.

where the zipped file goes ?

also how to unzip ?

1. You should have your Google Account on the old phone (which I would assume so, otherwise where would you get legit apps)
2. Go to menu>settings>accounts and sync>your google account>make sure "contacts" is checked".
3. Go on a PC web browser and login to Gmail. Go to contacts and look if there is a group labeled "My Contacts" containing all your phone contacts. You can also edit them from here.
4. If the contacts are there, then they are backed up to cloud and all you need to do on your new phone is login and enable sync
5. If they are not there, on your old phone you have to go to Contacts>Menu>Settings>Export/Import>Export to... Here settings may differ on every phone. Some may have "Export to Google", which you want. On others you have to "Export to SD card" first before going "Import to Google".
6. Once they are imported to Google, depending on your internet connection and number of contacts, in a few minutes they should all be up on Gmail. Then you can sync them to your new phone. If you set up the phone to always add contacts to Google, on any new phone you get (whether Android, iPhone or Windows), simply logging in to your Google Account will let you transfer contacts.

For users who do not have a internet connection you can do a Export -> to SD card. Then take that SD card out and put inside the new phone. Do a Import -> from SD card. Assumption is you do have a removable SD card to play around.

OK. I'll do this ...is not I need to sync after doing this ? how to do this ?

1. Once you enable contacts in accounts settings, it will automatically sync provided you have background sync enabled (its in the same menu).

2. My contacts in Gmail is well, in Gmail contacts. I don't know how to say it to be more simpler. Open Gmail on your PC (not on your phone), click on the button that says "Contacts", then look at the "My Contacts" Group. Or you could just search for "Google Contacts". It will bring you to the same place.

I dont have it. There is no such button says "Contacts" in my Gmail.

Is it hidden somewhere ? I also checked gmail settings but did not find it.

By the way...I tried sync "gmail , calender , Contacts" in old phone and same also in New Phone ....but no contacts imported into my new phone.

I did not like it. Is there any other easy workaround ?

Can I solve it using Apps ? I have dropbox installed in both phones ....Can it be of any use here ?

come again please....Where is that export contact menu ?

home>settings > ??

I just checked Gmail, and well, it seems you have to click on the word "Gmail" on the upper left, above the part where it says INBOX. I have included screenshots so you'd understand better (of course I blacked out personal details).

1st, this is where the Contacts button is on Gmail:

Then this is the contacts management part. You have to look under "My Contacts" because those are the phone contacts.

Also if you have enabled sync on old phone but it does not appear in new phone, it simply means that the contacts on your old phone are not saved to Google but saved to phone or SIM. As instructed, you have to export this to a CSV file first before you can send it to either Google or your new phone. I have no idea what phone model you have, but on my phone its simple Contacts>menu button> export/import>export to SD card. Then you again repeat the steps contacts>menu button>export/import>import to Google. Or you can put the SD card in the new phone and choose "import from SD card".

I have done it...I see a .vcf file is exported into SD card when I do this.

I don't have import to Google . What shall I do ?

This is very much difficult for me. I dont know where SD card stays and how to insert SD card into other phone.....I'm not comfortable with this.

Any workaround here ?

First you need to power off old phone. Open back cover and take out the sd card (assume you got the filename.vcf already). Then put this sd card into the new phone also take out back cover. Next you power up new phone. Then inside Contacts spp, you can do Menu->Import from SD card and you are done.

I just used dropbox.

uploaded .vcf file in old phone's dropbox

downloaded .vcf in new phone's dropbox.

just opened using Contacts menu and contacts imported automatically :)

Thanks guys.

by the way ..I'm still not comfortable taking out SD Cards ....because when I open back cover I only find SIM card slot.....don't know where SD card stays actually ....

Maybe that phone hasn't got an sdcard? I think the manual is the best place to start ..... :D
