Root How to create a Nandroid?

Could someone please explain to a NEWB like me how to create a nandroid and what if any programs are needed?
I have rooted the D3.
I have Safestrap installed but not enabled. It will not boot if enabled.
I have the latest updates (.906)
I want to follow the "best Practices" thread but it does not explain how to do things.
Please remember I am a Newb, so things you take for granted may be crucial.
Do I have to Remove Safestrap before I create a nandroid?

TIA

Just like Clockwork Recovery, Safestrap has a Backup/Restore menu, and you can backup (create a Nandroid) your phone from there.

What is Clockwork Recovery?
Also once a nandoid is created do you need the original software to restore or will newer ver or different app be able to use it?

When creating a backup to either internal or external sd card, i get,

no / sdcard/.android_secure found. skipping backup of applications on external storage.

Does this mean I do not have a complete backup?
How do I fix this?

It is a custom Recovery used by many devices (including the Droid 3), though it is generally associated with the custom ROM CyanogenMod, which is not really supported on the Droid 3.

Here is a lot more info: Howto: Using the Recovery - CyanogenMod Wiki

I'll let you google CyanogenMod if you want more info about it. It's not really supported on the D3; there are ROMs based on it, but they are not fully-functional. I'd stay away from them for now.

A Nandroid is a full snapshot of your phone at the time that you backup. If you restore, your phone will be exactly the same as it was at the time that you ran the backup - apps, data, sms messages, phone call logs, homescreens, etc. If you ran the Nandroid backup two months ago, when you restore, your phone will look exactly like it did two months ago.

That's nothing to fix. When you move apps to internal storage, the phone creates a hidden folder called .android_secure to store the files and data. If you have no apps moved to internal storage, that folder will be empty. It's more of an informational message than an error message.

So all the installed apps are backed up?
That was on an internal sdcard backup.
Same when I backed up to external sdcard.
