Help How to disable email notifications

Hi,
How do I disable email notification sound?
I used this guide:
Enable / disable email notifications - HTC DROID Incredible ADR6300 - My Verizon Users
It does not work. I still get the sound.
My phone is not rooted.

GMail
GMail icon---Menu---Settings---Select Ringtone---Silent

If any other mail
Mail icon ---Menu---More---Settings---Notification Settings---Un-check Notification sound

You must do this for each e-mail account you have.

I understand now. So if I use gmail I should use gmail program. VERY stupid if you ask me. But ok.
