How to do OTA upgrade?

I don't have any option to even check for updates unless I use Kies. Yet there are some S2 owners who have the ability to upgrade over the air. How does one get the option to do this? I've checked the settings but there's nothing there that lets you check for updates.

Go to Settings/About Phone/Software update/Update. Make sure your device is connected via wi-fi as any update will be quite large.

I don't have the option "Software update" under Settings/About Phone.

The options I have are:
Status
Legal information
Model number
Android version (4.0.4)
Baseband version
Kernel version
Build number

That's odd and I don't know why you don't have the option available.

Is you phone rooted/custom Rom?

What does Kies say when you try it?

Edit: Is your phone carrier locked? If so, what carrier are you using?

Yes it's locked, T-Mobile UK. Kies tells me I'm on the latest firmware which is fine since the jelly bean update hasnt been released for the phone by T-Mobile in the UK yet. The phone has not been rooted.
Thanks.

Some carriers remove the OTA feature on their branded firmware, which I guess you have, if they do not use that update option.

That would explain why there is no OTA update option then.

As ironass says,
