How to get different vendor's widgets/apps?

Still new to Android so bear with me. I was wondering how/if it's possible to get apps designed for specific handsets on a different device (e.g. SIII apps on a Gnex)?

If it's possible, how would I do it? Do I need to root? Would it require a custom rom or is there a way to just install them?
