A foreign student from china brought a chinese samsung note I9220 and want to install an usa GPS app on it. My first thought was google map.
But I'm stumped because it has no google play app on it. And he has no idea how to download apps; the phone was given to him by some friend.
When I plug the phone into my pc's usb port, it is not recognized as a device.
There is samsung aires on it though, so files may be transferred that way.
Google site says if the phone doesn't come with google play, there's no support for downloading it.
I did some search and found some mention of downloading three google related apk files from some unknown servers. It is not clear if this would work on the particular android (2.3.6 gingerbread) on his phone, and I'm reluctant to download apps from an unknown server. I wonder if downloading an amazon app store is a good idea. It has no google map but has waze and some other gps apps.
How do people in china download android apps?
And what is the easiest way to get google map onto his phone?
