Help How to get rid of the stock mail app?

Hi all,

I only want the regular gmail app on my phone. (The one with the red lines on the envelope/icon)

The way it is now, if I just get one email, I will get two notifications-one being the gmail one and the other the plain old "mail" one.

How do I get rid of the plain one? (I never even set it up.)

Any help much appreciated.

Just go into the stock mail add > settings > Delete Account. You should be good after this. I know I did this too when I first set up the phone thinking if I added my gmail address it would just default to the gmail app but nope, it definitely uses their mail app.

I made a gmail account just so I could set up my phone. The only emails that go to it are promotional emails from restaurants, stores, etc. All of my important emails from family, friends, and professors go to my university email. What do you guys recommend I do as far as the stock mail app / gmail app?

If it's just spam and you want nothing to do with it, I'd go to your phone settings > Accounts & Sync > Google > Uncheck the sync button. There should be another account for "mail". Either delete this account or turn off synching too.

If you want to add your University Mail, you'll have to add it as a microsoft exchange account. Then you'll have to find out what your school's mail servers are (gmail is m.googe.com) and even then i'm not sure if it'll work.

so there's a chance I won't even be able to add my university account?

this is because you set up an account using the stock app, if you never launch stock app and just use gmail then you wont get double notification. All you have to do is not even touch the stock app.

You should be able to unless yourU has some strict rules against it. Go to your mail tab > add new account > choose microsoft exchange activesync > manual setup

This is where you need to put in your username/password but also the domain and or server name of your school. You'l'l have to dig around your school's website to figure that out. Otherwise maybe email the IT dept and just ask them. Unfortunately, I graduated college in '08 and that was before the smartphone craze so can't speak from experience.

I am an Android/TB newb (so hopefully any Android vets will chime in and correct any inaccuracies), coming from BlackBerry (email MACHINE). I have 4 different email accounts + Gmail. Like you, I only got Gmail for TB. I started with the native MAIL app but found it frustrating after coming from BB. I like having my email accounts separate as each is used for different purposes. Sure, unified box is color coded but I like them completely separate. Also, coming from BB, I liked having different notification tones for each account so I know (from the tone) which email hit. Someone recommended K-9. I deleted my MAIL accounts and loaded K-9 and never looked back. It seems to do all I want and probably more. The notification bar has icons indicating accounts. The pull-down shows which email accounts received (with counters), one click and I'm in that inbox, backing out brings up a summary page of all accounts with counters (one click and in that account), individual notification tones, set each account for different polling intervals, and more.

I still have much to learn and suspect there is more to find and tweak. It still is not push but if a particular account is important, you can poll every minute.

I have a yahoo, hotmail and 2 other personal Pop3 accounts coming thru my URL hosted on godaddy. The Hotmail occasionally has issues but that was so far only in the first couple of days. It has been behaving well last few days. When I setup the Hotmail, k-9 said free hotmail was not supported but it seems to be working fine now.

Hope this is helpful and I hope others chime in with corrections and/or other recommendations. Many luv unified inbox - not me. :)

BTW, have seen posts which indicate Gmail works in K-9 but I just leave my Gmail separate. The notifications bar has a designated icon for Gmail so it is nice to clearly see that separate and - like I said (like you) - my Gmail is only for TB.
