Help How to get system update for DesireTab on USB

diginick

Lurker
I got this 'knockoff' sort of tablet, years ago (April 2013) and trying to get it back up to speed-

It's very unresponsive, apps always crash, and it's overall a test of patience to use it everytime.
It's running Android version 4.0.4
There's also the option of Recovery Mode, which says "Reboot into the system in Recovery Mode. Can clear the data or system upgrade."

Anyways I'm trying to figure out how to upgrade the firmware. The system update option in settings doesn't work, as it says "please make sure you have update.zip in and/or sd card"
So, where can I get a newer OS version and download it on USB/or SD somehow, and would it work for this offmarket kind of tablet? Also, could I use an external hard drive instead of USB to download the firmware?

I also wonder if I should just try another factory reset, but worry since if apps will still work with it since it's so old.
Thanks for any advice.

You've no chance, I'm afraid.

Android always has to be built for the specific device - there is no generic build that can be used on different devices. These off-brand manufacturers rarely bother producing updates because software support costs them money, and you rarely find custom ROMs for them because you rarely get a community of users for such devices. If you can find the manufacturer's website you can try looking there for updates, but otherwise I really don't think there's a way.

OK thanks, the seller also said they don't support it anymore. So oh well.
Maybe I can try the recovery mode still.

I appreciate your response
