How to increase microphone volume?

I have been testing the voice quality of my new Galaxy S4 with my brother. He states that he hears a higher sound level when I use it in speaker phone mode. When I use it in the non speaker mode, the sound volume is lower.

So I want to know if there are ways to increase the microphone sound level? I am on Verizon Wireless. Thanks.

That's set up with instruments, it's not a user-settable thing. Check the mic hole for dust and lint - they're sound insulators. At worst, ask the carrier to replace the phone.

All levels are controlled by files in the /system/etc/snd_soc_msm folder. Root access is required, plus you'd need to know what you are doing (I don't).
