I'm new to the forum and android platform as well, Ive tablet pc Android 2.1 eclair installed and I'm planing to follow the instructions posted in that thread Tips HOWTO: Install Missing Android Market on XPERIA X10 Mini to get the android market working properly, so have a no idea whether it'll work or not but it worth to give it a try.
Regarding the app installation for android platform, as far as I can gather from googling and what I've seen so far, android market stands as milestone in this sector.
