How to keep Pie update from stopping gmail

It seems that with the PIE update, gmail is held back at times, rather than have emails delivered real time. I think it is related to the adaptive battery? How do I stop that?

Go into Settings > Apps, find GMail, select Advanced > Battery and you'll be able to exclude it from battery optimisation.
