How to know if the android had been rooted?

How to know if an android had been rooted (and installed any malware/spyware)?
say...

- a phone has been borrowed to somebody
- a phone has been unattended for a while
- a second hand phone just purchased
 
open your app drawer. if you see superuser", you'd be rooted. also the play store has a few root checkers.

no idea on the malware beside downloading apps lookout or avg

Best way to make sure theres no malware, after making sure it isnt rooted, is to factory reset :thumbup:
 
If you suspect spyware, do a factory reset, wipe system, and install a fresh ROM.

If you aren't currently rooted, your manufacturer will have a way to freshly reinstall all factory software.

That's really the only way to be sure

Someone could root, install spyware, and unroot. So being unrooted doesn't necessarily mean untampered
