How to know what headphones are Galaxy S4 compatible?

Made a related post over the summer & didn't really get anywhere.. round 2:

I've got a Verizon S4 Galaxy and a decent pair of Denon headphones. (3.5mm jack) They work fine with my laptop, Vita, hell even my old flip-phone/seemingly everything but my S4. Can anybody tell me why and/or how to know if a set will be compatible before purchase? Got an unexpected flight this week and would love to have some tunes on-hand! As always, thanks in advance. :)

If you're talking about buttons that control playback (play, pause FFW etc) not working, then I'm afraid it's pretty much trial and error as Google didn't specify any standards so all droids work differently - hence the almost complete absence of an after market.

On the other hand, if you're unable to get any sound from the Denon's that would have to be an issue with the earphone jack on the phone coz any headphone ought to work. I've certainly never had an issue with any of the many makes I've used (though that doesn't include Denon, admitttedly).

I did have an issue with the phone jack being a bit tight at first on my HTC which meant the jack didn't seat properly. This was fixed with the cautious application of firm pressure when pushing the jack home.

Not talking about in-line controls, as the Denon cans are simply headphones with a regular old, 3.5mm jack. (which btw physically fits the S4's receptacle perfectly) That said, I notice the earbuds that came with the phone have 3 sections on the part of the jack that actually penetrates the phone, whereas your average headset, speakers etc only have two. Does this have something to do with it? Also no, I get no sound whatsoever. They're a rather decent quality set, (AH-D1001), which as stated, work flawlessly with literally everything but my stupid phone. I guess at the very least you've given somewhere to place the blame, Google, as they seem hell bent on messing up everything they get their hands in! (IE - Youtube atm, heh)

Thank you for the response by the way. It seems nobody cares about this topic. For the originally mentioned flight, I wound up using the Samsung provided earbuds, and subsequently having sore ears & a headache after a mere 30min or so wearing them. Made a long day even more enjoyable. I guess Google's goal is that I buy their severely overpriced "beats" headphones or whatever.

Standard stereo plugs have three contacts; left channel (tip), right channel (ring), and ground sleeve). This is pretty much universally implemented on all equipment now, so I doubt that it's the cause here.

Mono jacks have only two contacts, while inline microphones add a fourth as as extra ring.

I get no sound whatsoever

The 32ohms impedance may be too high for the S4 to drive. Either that or the socket on the phone isn't making full contact with the headphone plug, most likely at the upper (sleeve) contact.

That would be HTC. ;)

(yeah, I meant rings on the jack, not sections :o) So I guess the Samsung buds have a built-in mic? As for the headset jack seating properly, I couldn't imagine one fitting any better.. so it must be the impedance. With that being said, what's the required spec? (seems like a detail they should make easily found, or maybe they have and I'm blind)
