How to Prep for JB

I am kinda new to Android. Had the Galaxy Note and now I have the S3. When the Note updated to ICS I just did a typical OTA update. After that, I began having all kinds of problems. A lot of people in forums said there is a whole process of factory resetting and wiping your phone multiple times before updating that helps limit update problems.

Anyone have a method to prepping for JB or am I being paranoid?

Personally, I think you're being paranoid. Let it do the update. If you find glitches, then do the factory reset.

Absolutely with ylexot and that.

I have never done any kind of prep on either my SGS2 or Tab 10.1, just accepted and processed the OTA updates when they came.

I have experienced no problems that way. Both devices have operated smoothly and trouble-free after the updates.

I had the same issue when updating my SII Skyrocket to ICS. It was slow and crashed all the time. After I did a factory reset it worked great. The JB update will wipe all your data anyway, so you may as well do a Factory Reset after you do the update. Either that, or wait on the update and check the forum to see if anyone is having issues upon updating. Just don't do all your customizing until you know for sure if you need to do the Factory Reset.

Most definitely there is a process.

1) Make a shrine consisting of
- an Android figurine- the original green bot. This is Jobu
- two white candles made by the fat of two female virgin sheep on either side of the Android
- place the original galaxy s in front of the android
- take 2 flower pedals from national flower of Korea, 2 rose pedals, and 3 jelly beans and scatter them on the galaxy s

2) charge your S3 in front of the shrine nightly now.

3) once the OTA update is officially released, place a slice of a granny smith apple on the galaxy s, sacrifice a chicken upon the alter and drizzle its blood upon the apple slice every 4.1 days and pray in tongues for 4.1 hours afterwards.

Now do not lose faith my brothers and sisters, the OTA update works in mysterious ways. Remember, the joy of the update is not in receiving the update, or the features that Jelly Bean offers. Instead, it is in the ritual of prayer and reflecting on the openess of the universe and the journey of patience.

Or you could just root it and get JB...

Incorrect.:( You must pray in tongues for 4.5 hours, not the 4.1 as stated by the OP.

[SOAPBOX] I have this same discussion on the Transformer Forums. Everyone says "You need to do AT LEAST ONE Factory Reset when receiving an update!". I highlighted the at least one for a reason. I find it funny that they think doing multiple factory resets are needed. One will just not do :). My favorite rules for update includes Backup (good), Then Factory Reset 3 times to make sure everything is clear (ha ha), update, Factory Reset three times again (again one is not good enough), then restore your apps from your backup :)

I even posted what a firmware update does and what a FR does (link and all) and I am told "well users report things are much better if you do multiple factory Resets!" :). Ahhh Testimonials got to love em and take them with a grain of salt. I also like manufactured numbers or people who infer those numbers "A majority of the people on this site says it helped them" or better yet "95% of the people I have helped on this site say doing multiple Factory Resets helped them!".

GAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

My favorite response to all this? I did the FR and it is still having issues :). OR I did a FR and now all my data/apps are gone, how do I get everything back!

I am of the thought (based on years of experience in this industry) that Factory reset is ONLY needed as a last resort. If you are seeing some behavior on your phone that can not be explained or helped away then maybe a FR would be a good start. We all know that apps can have an impact on systems (such as battery life). But because of the sandbox methodology used by Android this limits the apps ability to interfere at the OS level unless given special permissions similar to the released Google products/apps. Even they are shielded from doing harm in some ways. [/SOAPBOX]

Sorry but I really dislike the myths running around the Android world about all this.

As with any update backup. Take the update and use the device. If the device is acting up in some manner come back here or XDA first and ask your question. If there is not a reasonable answer available then and only then do a FR.
