How to prevent apps from auto-loading

Im using a Galaxy Nexus on ICS. I want to migrate from Gmail to K9Mail. I therefore no longer want Gmail to auto-load every time I receive an email. Since Gmail app is auto-loading, I am getting two notifications each time I receive an email (one on Gmail and one on K9mail).

Every time I terminate the Gmail app, it just loads back up when I receive an email. How can I prevent this? There has to be an easier way for such a simple feature.

Can you turn off the notifications in the GMail app?

(I don't have it on my phone, but you will need to root to use that solution).

You don't want to disable the gmail app. It provides a lot of other necessary functions and permanently disabling it will cripple your phone. Simply turn off the notifications for incoming email. Open the gmail app, then go to menu>settings tap on your gmail account and uncheck the box for notifications.

You can disable the Auto reloading by following simple steps as below:
the Another thing you should check is the login items. Go to System Preferences -> Accounts -> choose yours ->login items. Delete those you don't want to open items.

You can also just go to System Settings > Accounds and Sync > Select your Google Account > uncheck Sync GMail.

You cna still sync your gmail manually by going into the app, but this will prevent it from auto syncing, thus removing all notifications from the app.
