How to put S4 into standby mode?

To me "standby mode" just means "sitting in your pocket with the screen off", which doesn't need any special methods to activate.

If you mean "airplane mode", that should be in the wireless/network settings, or probably in a quick launch in the notification area.

There has been no water damage that I'm aware of, and normal (non-speakerphone) works great. Is there actually a separate mic for the speakerphone?

I'm not sure how long after I installed Kitkat that this started happening and it may not be related. I just can't seem to figure it out.
