How to receive notifications when phone is locked?

netfreak

Hello everyone,
Its the first time I ever bought an Android phone and the one I got is Nexus 5.

The very first thing about which I am starting to face a problem is notifications while the phone is locked. It only makes sound upon the arrival of sms, new whatsapp message & other social apps alongwith LED indication
But,
What I want is, it to illuminate the screen alongwith the notification sound while the phone is locked. So I may get to know about it even if the phone is on silent while phone is locked.

I tried installing an app known as Dashclock bt that was consuming upto 99mb in the background which was huge and I thought its going to be a huge battery drain problem cuz of it so I removed it :/

Please help :'(

In app settings may have the option (I know Whatsapp does and 8sms does for texts)

As it is I know the LED colour for each app so I don't need my phone lighting up. That's why the LED is there really.

Yes but there are other apps available as well like KIK. Whenever I receive any message & the screen is locked, all my phone does is either play a sound(incase the phone isnt silent) or it remains quite and I do not get to know about any message(until and unless I switch on my phone or lock at the LED)

I want some way to be notified by the screen illumination upon receiving the messages

If you wasn't looking at the phone as the message came in you wouldn't see it light up either though unless you want it to light up and permanently stay lit.

Anyway, there's probably an app to help you there, you may need to be rooted though. It's never been an issue with me as the LED does the job so I can't help much really sorry.

Ahmmm. . . So rooting is the solution for that.

One thing more, what if I do not root my phone. Is there any app which may solve the purpose and also takes least amount of ram so to give me a better battery timing even after its installation?

If you are ok with just having the LED light up (you can get a specific color for each notification type), you can try lightflow. Try the free version to make sure you are happy with it. (Doesn't require root).
It has no noticeable battery drain, and most importantly, the developer actually helps if you reach out to him with any issues that you face!

If you need the screen to light up, lightflow can light up your screen for 5 seconds upon each notification too, but in my case, looking at the LED flashing tells me exactly what notification is waiting for me... (yellow flashing for Email, white flashing for SMS, red for missed call etc... you can customize it any way you want it).

No, I am not the developer, and am in no way affiliated with the dev. I just found this app to do exactly what I needed it to do :)

Regarding dashclock, it doesn't really drain your battery. Try it out.

Yeah Lightflow is great for assigning colours to apps, I tried that out before I realised some of the apps I use can be set individually.

Definitely worth looking at the free version :)

as omar days said 99 MB of memory is nothing compared 2 GB of ram and android is very efficient about ram uses now since jellybean. it is said unused ram is wasted ram.
i use dashclock too but mine is using only 31 MB ram with couple of added extra widgets. youtube is at 101 MB in comparison. my guess for battery drain will be negligible.

You may very well be looking for AcDisplay. Its pretty much active display from Moto.

This is one option for you, OP, as is dynamic notifications.

To address what some other people have said, RAM usage has nothing to do with battery usage. All the RAM is powered all the time anyways, and 99mb is not very much. Android manages RAM by leaving frequently used apps and processes in memory anyways. This allows for a quicker device and a little battery savings as the phone does not need to load an app into RAM every time it is used.

Cool. Thats very nice
I just installed ACDisplay and it solves the purpose of mine that I was asking. Thank you so much everyone :)
Please bear with me as I am completely new to the world of Android, so you might see a lot of new topics posted by me asking about different questions :p

To answer this specific question....Light Flow can do it. Try the free version. It is fully functional and not a timed trial. You just can't use it with as many apps as the paid version

Glad you found something that worked for you. Don't be afraid to click the 'Thanks' button if we helped you out ;)

@OP
just fyi if you ever think about custom kernels and such, keep in mind that you have Acdisplay installed. i have seen some sporadic posts from few users who may have some problems. do some research before settling on a kernel.
