How to replace icons with a plain list

I just made the switch to a smartphone, with a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, with Gingerbread 2.3.6. It's great to finally have access to the internet!

Going to be a big learning curve, though... It's hard to hold onto and doesn't fit into pockets well. Basically I have to carry a huge chunk around with me now. But the thing that bugs me the most (so far) is the icons all over my screen. I got rid of some, but there are still many left. I would like to see them in a ALPHABETICAL LIST on my screen instead of little icons all over.

(On my computer, I can make Windows Explorer display files as a detailed list, instead of icons.) Is it possible on the Skyrocket to get rid of the space-wasting icons and just see a concise list of titles?

Thanks in advance for any help!

jef, What does "tap the app drawer" mean? When I click the app button, it takes me to 4 pages of little app icons.

They ARE in alphabetical order so far, except for the couple I just downloaded that show up on the last page. But the constant swiping through pages is kinda annoying. What I was hoping for was to use the space that each app-icon consumes and fill it with NAMES-only of several apps.

If only names were displayed, one page could fit at least 4 columns of 12 thus, 48 app names. (Instead of just 16 app icons.)

Doit2it, I'll check out LauncherPlus, thanks.

Oh, those instructions sound like they would be perfect... unfortunately my phone doesn't have those same options. I can follow the instructions up until "SORT", which I don't have.

The Launcher Plus suggestion sounds good. They have a demo video as well, to help you use the app. In their demo, they made a list of app-names, and it ended up being 8 words long and 2 columns... so one page represented 16 apps. But since I currently can fit 16 icons on my page, I was hoping for something that would fit at least twice as many apps. In the Launcher Plus description it says you can customize font size. I'm going to try that; perhaps smaller font allows more than 16 per page. That would be awesome! (What can I say...I'm just not a picture-person, I like words.)

In the meantime, I did find another app called Multicon. I'm struggling a little bit to use it (because I'm a beginner), but so far it's showing 64 icons per page. Pretty cool! The downside is that it's still icons, not words like I was hoping for.

But, there sure are a lot of smart folks out there. Thanks for the suggestions!

That's pretty odd. All Samsung phones I've encountered has those options, but then again I'm outside the US using international versions without the carrier edited firmware crap.

As for just names, if you remove the icons, wouldn't they be a bit harder to press correctly?

use Lightning Launcher and Lightning Launcher setup

Its a no Frills Minimalistic Launcher.
After installing both of the apps
Switch to lightning launcher and use menu and click customize and you can use List with Icons options .(scrollable one page list)
Alternatively you can use Windows 7 launcher but it has tiles and ads ...

There are some other Launchers available which offer a list based app drawer but I cant remember which ones .
