How to replace "wheel" in Calendar

Hi,

On my old Nexus 6P phone, when I created an event in the Calendar app, I was able to select the time using the clock that appeared on the screen.

Now, on my Huawei Mate 9 phone, selecting the time for an event I'm adding to my calendar involves scrolling through a wheel for hour and minute.

How can I get the clock back instead of this annoying wheel?

TIA!

The "wheel" was a common interface in early versions of Android, and it sounds like Huawei have decided to stay stuck in the past (the 6P was also made by Huawei, but Google were responsible for the software).

I'm afraid the only two solutions I can think of are "use a different calendar app" and "use a different phone", the latter obviously not being helpful. I don't guarantee that different calendar app will use a different picker, but it might: I've tried the various different calendar apps I have on my phone (Android 8.1) and tablet (Android 5.1, Samsung version), and found one (Digical) that used different pickers on the two devices ("clock face" on the phone, "number pad" on the tablet), despite being the same app version. Most others were using a "clock face" picker on both devices, though the tablet's native app (S-Planner) used something like the old-fashioned "wheels". So it may be that if you try some different calendar apps you'll find one or more that uses a more acceptable time picker than your current app (presumably the pre-installed one, which may well be Huawei's version, as many manufacturers include their own calendar app).

Can you tap on the number? Samsung also uses a wheel type to scroll through numbers, but you can just directly tap on the number to bring up a keyboard to type.

Actually I think that used to be true generally, back when this was a common format of time picker. However, the design doesn't prompt you to do that (though the version in my S-Planner, with arrows above and below the numbers, probably encourages this more than the versions with skeuomorphic wheel graphics, which really encourage you to rotate the wheels).
