Root How to Root the S 4G on a Mac

Can someone in the massive brain trust community that is Android PLEASE post instructions on how to root on a Mac. I've done it on my EVO but there seems to be nothing reliable for the Mac and the S4G.

May of us will bow down in supplication for your wisdom, O Great Ones!

its actually the same steps, you need the sdk and to put your phone in fastboot mode, then just use fastboot commands (they are platform universal)

Thanks for your reply, shabbypenquin. I'll see if I can figure out what the fastboot commands are. It's been a looong time since I've tried this.

well if you have adb setup, then adb reboot bootloader will get you into fastboot, from there in terminal type fasboot devices to ensure your phone is connected properly, then type fastboot oem unlock

from there you can fastboot flash recovery /path/to/clockworkmod.img

That guide makes me a little nervous since the OP no longer supports it.....anyone here actually used it to success?

I understand some of the words you said separately but when you put them together I'm sooo confused.

Yes, I used that guide to successfully root my Nexus S 4G on a Mac. The only thing I did differently is for whatever reason my phone would not mount while in Clockwork Mod, so I restarted, loaded in the necessary files, then went back to the bootloader, set it to Clockwork again, then finished the root. Took me about 10 minutes total.

So I am using this guide and I can't get my phone to mount either. What "necessary files" did you load to make this guide work?

Exactly my question. How did you 'load' them? Exact steps, please. Let's get a comprehensive, working guide for the Mac community.

Thanks!

Alright, using the XDA guide already linked, I did steps 1-6 as written (step 1 has a link to the files you need).

Then, instead of mounting the phone through Clockwork Mod, I restarted the phone. Then, from the home screen, I pulled down the notifications bar, clicked on "USB connected," and then used that to mount the phone onto my computer desktop. I took the file "su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip" from the adb folder that you download in step one and copied it to the mounted phone icon on the desktop.

I then repeated steps 2, 4, and 6, which took me back to the bootloader and reloaded Clockwork Mod (this is necessary since restarting the phone at the point I did wipes Clockwork Mod).

At this point, once you repeat step 6, you're back in Clockwork Mod, and have the necessary file on your phone. You can then do step 17 and the second set of instructions in the XDA guide. It sounds confusing but it's actually very simple. It's also helpful to look at the code for each step and see what it's doing. That way, if you mess up, you can see where you might have gone wrong.

Did that help?

Thanks, Supermallet. I think I have enough courage to now attempt this. and thanks to you, as well, Shabbypenguin. I'll let you know how it goes.

thank you so much, that worked perfectly! Sorry for the trouble, I had been trying for some time to do what you said but for some reason I was trying to flash the wrong su file. Seeing someone write out the step out really helped me.

Glad to see it's been working out for people. Now I just have to decide if I want to flash a ROM or keep stock.

sorry to intrude this thread but Im thinking about going with the nexus s 4g over the evo 3d. i cant seem to find a detailed how to root for pc users. is that anywhere around here?

When I finally had a moment I used from the link in Post #5. Took two tries but I got it. Much easier than rooting my EVO.

Ok... New Nexus guy with a mac... I'm lost. Well... Not "lost" but stuck. I copy and paste the first line of code and Terminal says my device isn't found.

Now, I'm reading about the SDK... The instructions in that link ([GUIDE] Root 2.3.3 On a Mac WITH OEM Unlock! - xda-developers) don't say anything about installing that... What am I missing, here?

.edit.
Ok, now I see that I'm running 2.3.5 and this is a guide for 2.3.3. Where do I head for help with this? Is it rootable at this point?

.edit.2.0.
I love me some internets... Found my root tools here: http://androidadvices.com/root-sprint-nexus-gingerbread-235-update/

Ok... I *think* I'm rooted (I have the superuser app). I know the bootloader is unlocked. I can't get into recovery, though. There's a triangle an exclamation point and our green friend, and I hafta pull the battery.

Man... This takes me back to rooting my Evo... Which was pretty simple.

I'ma need some help.

All hail *ROM Manager*!

I've got working CW Mod Recovery now. I'll probably flash Amon Ra later, but I'm ROOT!!

Not to get my ROM Flash on!

I am showing my ignorance here, but will this allow me to run the BLN app? The only reason I wish to root my phone is for wifi tethering and the BLN app. I currently have the tethering because I didn't update my phone but I would like to eventually update it.

Thanks!
