how to run an application ?

Hi

I have two query

Query1

How to run an application in the background ?

Query2

How to exit an application ?

I'm using Samsung Galaxy Y mobile.

Could you please reply these queries ?

1. Applications that can and should run in the background, will.

2. Normally you don't. Android will automatically close apps for you as necessary. But some apps, for example Firefox, do have a close or quit function, which can usually be ignored. Or you can use the 'Home' or 'Back' button to close apps (well, sorta).

Android is designed to be as simple to use as possible. Mostly, just do what you want to do and let Android handle processes for you.

What is the app and why do you need it running in the background?

The easiest way to 'exit' an app, is to press the Home button. If it is still doing something then it should keep doing it, otherwise there is no need for it to use CPU

app connects to internet every 10 seconds interval and fetches latest info from internet.

I don't want to exit this app . But at the same time I also dont want to keep this app open all the time in screen. because I have to open other apps . So how do I keep the previous app running but open other apps and work on other apps ?

What is the solution ?

If it's set to connect and poll info every 10 seconds, it will. You don't need to do anything to make it run, it just will. See #1 in my 1st reply.

Ok. but issue here is ... as soon as I use Home button to go back to home screen to open other apps ... this app exits .

Is it possible to open multiple apps and keep all of them running and can switch apps ? If so , how to open multiple apps without exiting any apps and how to switch between running apps ?

When you hit home, the app will still run even if you can't see it, if it needs to.
What app is it that you want to always be running in the background?

Wrong.

app stops running when you hit Home...........you can also verify this by checking status of application

Settings > Application > Manage Application > Running

Of course you will find last app list when you hit Home but those are not running.

You may search this forum also...many members have confirmed that when you hit Home app stops running. .....multitasking issue.

Please note these are not background running applications.

anyway ..anybody know any good multitasker app ? I would like to give that a try ...

You are wrong...you're not understanding how this stuff works. Just because an app is not listed as running does not mean it will not automatically run when it's set to. For example, my weather app is not listed in running apps, yet it still automatically connects to the internet every hour and updates the weather, just as it's set to do.

This is not true in a strict sense. Android does multitasking, but not in the usual way Linux or Windows does. When you press the home button, the app is cached into memory for instant retrieval. Depending on the app and/or system requirements, it may or may not continue to actively run.

There is no 'multitasker app' - it's already built-in to Android.

Again, relax, do what you need to do and let Android handle running processes.

He's using a Galaxy Y. The issue is that most of us here are using Android with 512MB-1GB memory. Basically we can keep more apps open than he can, since the Galaxy Y only has 290MB memory for RAM. The app he is referring to is probably making use of more RAM that his phone is incapable of keeping it running in the background, unlike our phones with more RAM. Basically, if I run his app on my phone with 512MB RAM, it will keep on running because I have more space to run it. He can't. Its the normal problem with low end phones.

I just found out .. app is running... because I find the app in Task Manager > Active App .... with this usage..

RAM: 8.44 MB ..CPU: 0.00%

But it is not connecting to internet. H with the upload and download arrow does not glow and appear in the notification bar.

What is the solution ?

Here is what I find after pressing Home key > Task Manager > Active application

Is not the apps goes to cached and idle state when I press Home key ? Thats the reason I asked how do I run it in the background

Its cached. I suggest just use widget. The app itself may not be designed to run in the background, but that app has a widget which will stay on the homescreen and update at intervals. Go to an empty homescreen, long press on it and select widgets. Look for that app's widget and press on it.

Ok. I did that and I get 3 widgets for this app . Which one to choose ?

Also if I want to exit .. what is the procedure to exit if an app run via widget ?

Well, all of those will work. The only difference is the size. The 4x4 widget will take up one whole screen, and the 4x2 will use half, so you can use the other half for other widgets or shortcuts. The "small" one seems to be just a homescreen shortcut.

And you don't exit a widget. As long as its on your homescreen, its always running.

To exit (if you can't from the widget), you probably need to click on that app's icon (either on your homescreen or in your app drawer) and exit from there.

Or maybe "end" from the task manager.
(I can't edit my posts right now is why my second thought is separate from my post right above this one).

Even if you exit an app, if it has a widget, updates will still work for the widget. Generally widgets don't have exit buttons. Just the same way how exiting Facebook will not stop its widgets from updating and somesuch.

I choose Portfolio ( 4x2 ) size ...after this I get a configuration screen ...but there is no Save & Close option . I am not able to add the widget.

How do you add it ?

I just went over and installed it.
When you click on the widget you want, it installs on the homescreen just as it's supposed to (provided that you provided a screen with enough room for the widget).
There is no "confirmation and save";
There never is on any widget install; It's not the way widgets work.
And I see that there is no exit; again, this widget (app) is designed to run full-time/real time. This is the nature of this particular app.
